Project

Kawelle ( /kuh.way.lay/ ) is a 100% volunteer, 501(c)3 tax exempt, non-profit organization building an IT center & school in the rural village of Vumilia in Maai Mahiu, Kenya. Kawelle’s IT center will bring computers to the village and establish a school educating the basics of computers and advanced courses in web design and development. We are also establishing an internet cafe within Vumilia that even those who are not attending the school can utilize to access the world-wide-web. Students will be empowered with a trade needed in Kenya, as well as have a market base that extends to anyone needing web development world-wide!

Computers and IT education is the first trade Vumilia deemed to be the most important by enabling them to work sustainable jobs that are needed and supported by the country’s economy, as well as empowering them to take their skill globally. Our project is rooted in participatory development with the community and will enable those of Vumilia, Maai Mahiu to become educated in an area that will allow them to reach self-sufficiency, while being knowledgeable in a trade that boosts the well-being of both the community in which they live, as well as Kenya itself. Vumilia and Kawelle expect to build upon the IT program and expand by educating other sustainable trades in the future as well!

The land has been purchased and construction is underway for the Kawelle IT center!
